Us college Offers and then withdraws? What are some behaviors that can lead to an offer being withdrawn?

For students who have experienced a difficult application season, getting an offer from their favorite university is undoubtedly a happy thing, but have you ever experienced the awkward situation of sending an offer to the wrong person? Today, editor of Hangzhou Dingwen School will take a look at these incidents of sending wrong offers to study abroad!

A spokesman for Northeastern University said that because of a "technical error," 48 of the nearly 64,000 graduate applicants received incorrect acceptance emails.

Let many applicants in one day, as if sitting on the roller coaster of life, experienced a big ups and downs.

After the incident, Northeastern University has immediately contacted these applicants to clarify the error, the application is still valid, and the materials of all applicants are reviewed. This is not the first time that such a "sloppy" thing has happened. In October 2022, the Northeastern University School of Law mistakenly sent more than 205 admission letters to law school applicants because of a "technical error." Although Northeastern University apologized to the applicants for the technical glitch at the time, some applicants did not buy it and planned to appeal through legal channels.

In addition, in 2017, Columbia University sent admission letters to 277 applicants for the Mailman School of Public Health, but after more than an hour, it sent an email explaining that these 277 offers were sent by our hand. We deeply regret the misunderstanding and inconvenience caused by this, and will pay more attention to it in the future.

In addition to the mistake, you should know one thing: Universities have the right to withdraw offers!

This year, a student who received an offer from Duke University was withdrawn by the school because he did not reply to the school's email and phone call to confirm his address. Fortunately, the student contacted the admissions office in time, cleared up the misunderstanding, and was able to enroll normally.

So, what are the behaviors and problems that cause an American college to withdraw an offer?

01 . Improper behavior

According to the NACAC report, 35 percent of the withdrawn offers were related to student disciplinary behavior, ranging from absenteeism and cheating on campus to more serious offenses such as violence and drug trafficking.

According to The PIE News survey, more than a third of admissions officers use social media to find out about applicants, a 25 percent increase from the previous year, and this trend is expected to grow as social media continues to grow.

In 2019, a Harvard freshman was expelled from Harvard for repeatedly using the insulting term "Ni*ger" on social media and making racial slurs and insulting remarks.

While it is common for schools to judge students based on their behavior, sometimes it is better to make a mistake than to let go of top schools with plenty of good students.

Therefore, we must remind those students who advocate "freedom of speech" that in public, racial discrimination or sexist words must not be used! In the group chat, do not spread violence, obscenity and other inappropriate content!

02. Academic cheating & inconsistent academic level

It is well known that Ivy League schools and the top schools in the ranking place high demands on students' academic ability.

The 2009 NACAC report revealed that 65% of offer revocations were related to a decline in academic performance, with private colleges taking this more seriously: 84% of offer revocations at private colleges were related to academic performance, compared with 49% at public colleges.

If a student's grades suddenly drop significantly before admission, the admissions office will consider whether there are potential academic problems with the student's future enrollment.

Before applying, do not replace the highly difficult AP course with a "water course", or give up the course midway, and do not "rot" in advance because of the Offer!

On the other hand, if the pursuit of false results and academic fraud or cheating, in the eyes of American university admissions officers is also very deadly!

Any type of academic dishonesty, whether it's plagiarism or cheating on an exam, will be rejected by elite schools. Instead of hoping to take advantage of entering a famous school, it is better to settle down, lay a solid foundation, and get a dream school offer with your own talent and learning!

03. Tear up the ED binding agreement

In the United States application process, the early application period of the Offer is also unique binding: students who apply in the ED stage, once admitted by the university, must accept the Offer of the university and withdraw the application of other universities.

Because of the high degree of overlap between the Ivy League and other top schools, colleges and universities will share the list of applicants who passed the ED round, so don't think that you can secretly apply to more schools during the ED application period, admissions officers will not find out!

If a student is found to have violated this agreement, applied for ED in more than one university, or did not report to ED after admission, it may be directly pulled into the blacklist by various universities, and there is no possibility of admission.

This year, a high school student admitted to New York University in the ED stage, did not withdraw his RD application as agreed, and finally got the offer of Berkeley, California.

This incident may cause New York University to have a negative impression of the application of students from the high school and affect the success rate of other students from the high school applying to New York University.

04. Concealing and lying about your experience

The application materials are not trustworthy

According to the NACAC report, 29 percent of withdrawn offers and student application information were inaccurate.

American universities attach great importance to the integrity of students, so applicants should be reminded to submit all materials on time, and to ensure that the materials are consistent with the transcript information filled in when applying and are authentic.

If it is found that the writing is ghostwriting or there are problems such as proxy exam, the offer will be revoked. If you are a Pugao student and the project you apply for has requirements for college entrance examination scores, you should contact the school in time to deal with it.

Most universities will ask students to proactively address any academic or behavioral problems that have arisen during their experience.

All students will be asked to sign a good faith clause stating that the information they provide on their application is true.

The clause warns that if there is any concealment or false application, it will affect the final admission.

Therefore, if a student has a problem after being admitted to a university, he or she should proactively contact the admissions office by phone or email. The consequences of confessing up front are much less severe than admitting it later.

In addition, if the school system fails to pass the background check by late submission or failure to submit additional required supplementary information by the required date, the offer is at risk of being withdrawn.

Therefore, after receiving the admission notice, we must immediately confirm the relevant information with the school and prepare the required information in a timely manner.

Here, Hangzhou Dingwen School would like to remind you: American universities attach great importance to the integrity and quality of students. Do not think that you can get into school by chance, or that once you get in, everything will be fine.

The university is an open and diverse academic environment. We should always pay attention to our words and actions, respect the views and diversity of others, and avoid making offensive, discriminatory or extreme comments.

At the same time, guidelines and regulations aimed at maintaining harmony in the academic and social environment are observed and the values and norms of the school are respected.

Finally,  editor of Hangzhou Dingwen School hopes that everyone can feel their study abroad life!
